The latest on Covid-19 vaccinations

01/08/2022

Since the 8th December 2020, there have been an altogether 148.5 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines administered in the UK. Here’s a more specific look at the numbers as of 7th June 2022:

  • 40 million have been double jabbed and boosted
  • 50 million have been double jabbed
  • 53.5 million have received at least one dose. With the population of the UK currently standing at 68.5 million, this means that roughly 78% of the UK’s population have received at least one dose.

Dr Mary Ramsay of the UK Health Security Agency has remarked that whilst this is an impressive rate of vaccination, it is still nonetheless crucial to remain up to date with jabs. Furthermore, the consensus of Public Health authorities is that those who are missing any doses should get their latest jab. If not, we at Healthwatch would be happy to know why and understand what may be preventing people from getting their jab. Please do reach out to us if this describes you; we are here to provide free and confidential information on the vaccine as well as other health services.

The most recent and perhaps most important update is that an Autumn 2022 booster jab is soon to be offered. This however will mostly be on offer to those in high-risk categories along with those on the front-line of the pandemic (e.g. medical professionals). This new booster is important as it will prevent those most at risk becoming severely ill with Covid-19 during Winter. This has been when Covid rates have had significant peaks and hospitals are usually already struggling with Cold, Flu, and Pneumonia cases that are common during these months.

Finally, there are updates as to government plans to get as many people as possible vaccinated. The government have reported that what most commonly prevents people from getting vaccinated are misconceptions about the vaccine, distrust of public officials, but also accessibility to the vaccine. It has been found by the government that conversations with trusted friends and family members is why people have decided to get vaccinated.
