Sheroni's Work Placement - Experiencing Healthwatch from the perspective of a Public Health Student
13/12/2024
As a third-year Public Health student, my work placement at Barking and Dagenham Healthwatch has been eye-opening and an enriching experience. It provided me with valuable hands-on experiences and insight into the real-world involvement of public health values and promotion. My time at Healthwatch not only deepened my understanding of the complexities surrounding health disparities but it also allowed me to gain diverse skills and experiences that benefit my future career in public health.
My journey in Healthwatch allowed me to research major public health concerns such as inadequate services of GP practices, women’s and young people's health. Through working with the local community of Barking and Dagenham, Healthwatch enabled me to see the different levels of interventions used to promote, advocate and educate individuals on health-related issues. During my time working I gathered research and data about young people's experiences, addressing their specific health concerns, such as mental health, sexual health and access to health services as well as women's health which are often overlooked or under-prioritised.
Furthermore, I had the opportunity to engage with the community and understand their challenges when accessing healthcare services through my Enter and View visit to the Thames View Health Centre. We interviewed local patients of the GP about service accessibility, appointment availability and patient care. Through community-based involvement and feedback, I gained awareness and witnessed firsthand the health concerns that directly affect individuals regarding the quality of patient care. This hands-on experience taught me how patient feedback is crucial in shaping public health interventions and policy. This project suggests the importance of understanding and addressing the needs of individuals who often face barriers to accessing the care they need.
Overall, I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked alongside a dedicated team that is making a real difference in the lives of people in Barking and Dagenham. This journey allowed me to understand the significance of public health organisations, their contribution to the community and their impact on individuals. This experience has reinforced my commitment to working towards health equity and improving services for those who need them most.
